Four Models for Analyzing Different Accidental/Toxic Release Scenarios

The BREEZE HAZ DISPERSION product suite includes four distinct dispersion models for analyzing different accidental/toxic chemical release scenarios. The models - AFTOX, INPUFF, DEGADIS, and SLAB, differ in their capabilities and allowable source types.

AFTOX is a Gaussian puff/plume model developed by the U.S. Air Force to model neutrally buoyant gaseous releases. Both gas and liquid (evaporating to a neutrally buoyant gas) sources can be modeled with AFTOX. Source types include point, area, and liquid spill sources.

INPUFF is an integrated Gaussian puff model developed by the U.S. EPA to model buoyant or neutrally buoyant gas releases from a stack. The release duration can be specified as either finite or continuous. Source types include stacks and surface-based releases.

DEGADIS is a dense-gas dispersion model developed by the U.S. Coast Guard/U.S. EPA and is used to determine hydrocarbon flammability levels and toxic concentrations from episodic dense-gas/aerosol releases. Source types include evaporating pools, ground-level gaseous/aerosol and vertical jet releases.

SLAB is a dispersion model that simulates the atmospheric dispersion of denser-than-air releases. The model was developed by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory under the support of the U.S. Department of Energy, the USAF Engineering and Services Center, and the American Petroleum Institute. Source types include evaporating pools, vertical/ horizontal jets, and stack releases.

Also included is Trinity’s proprietary source-term model, EXPERT , which is used to calculate source-term parameters (e.g., emission rate, evaporation rate, release duration) that are inputs for dispersion modeling analyses.

With BREEZE HAZ DISPERSION, environmental and safety professionals enjoy the following features:

  • Comprehensive chemical database with more than 140 common industrial chemicals. Users can add new chemicals or modify existing data
  • Toxic Endpoint (EPRG-2/LOC), IDLH (Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health), and TLV-TWA (Threshold Limit Value-Short Term Exposure Limit) values when available
  • An expandable database of site characteristics for more than 700 meteorological stations, as well as EPA’s worst case and alternative meteorological conditions
  • Importation of AutoCAD ® .DXF and Windows .BMP files
  • Instant visualization of model results: 2-D contour plots, concentration vs. downwind distance charts, plume cross-section plots, and text summary reports
  • Scenario management for “what if” meteorology and source scenarios
  • Online documentation, sample applications, and technical appendices
  • Windows Explorer ® -type interface
  • Compatible with Excel ® cut/paste options
  • Geographic Information System (GIS) interface
